Bihar to Get Its First Bullet Train — Major Rail Infrastructure Boost

Bihar is set to witness a major transformation in rail connectivity with the announcement of its first bullet train project. As part of the Union Budget 2026–27, the central government has proposed a high-speed rail corridor that will pass through Bihar, bringing the state into India’s elite bullet train network for the first time. The proposed corridor will connect Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Siliguri in West Bengal, with Patna as a key stop.
The project is being planned under the supervision of Indian Railways, and aims to significantly reduce travel time across eastern and northern India. At present, trains between Varanasi and Patna take around 6 to 8 hours depending on the service. With the bullet train, this journey could be completed in nearly one to two hours, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable travel for passengers.
According to officials, the high-speed corridor is expected to pass through important cities in Bihar such as Buxar, Ara, Patna, Katihar, and Kishanganj. Trains on this route may operate at speeds ranging from 300 to 350 kilometers per hour, matching global bullet train standards. The project is also expected to boost trade, tourism, and employment opportunities in the state.
In the same budget, Bihar received a record railway allocation of over ₹10,000 crore, which will support land surveys, feasibility studies, and future construction work related to high-speed rail and other railway infrastructure projects. While the detailed project report and construction timeline are yet to be finalized, the announcement itself is being seen as a milestone for Bihar’s development.
Once implemented, the bullet train is expected to change the travel experience in Bihar, improve regional connectivity, and strengthen the state’s role in India’s fast-growing transportation network.
