Haryana ADGP Y. Puran Kumar Dies by Suicide in Chandigarh Residence
Chandigarh, October 7, 2025 — Y. Puran Kumar, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 2001 batch in the Haryana cadre, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his official residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday afternoon. Police suspect the death to be a case of suicide.

Deceased: Y. Puran Kumar, who held the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) and was currently posted as Inspector General (IG), Police Training Centre (PTC), Sunaria, Rohtak.
Circumstance: Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer shot himself with his service revolver in the basement of his house around 1:30 PM. Reports suggest the basement was soundproof.
Discovery: His body was reportedly found by his daughter, who then informed the police.
Investigation: Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed the incident, stating that police and a Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team had reached the spot, and an investigation is underway. As of now, no suicide note has been recovered. Police are questioning those present at the residence and examining if recent professional or personal reasons contributed to the tragic event.

Family: His wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior Haryana IAS officer, was not at home at the time of the incident, as she is currently in Japan leading a delegation with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Career and Controversies: The 52-year-old officer was known for his upright stance and his willingness to challenge authority. He had been vocal about administrative issues, including alleged caste bias within the department.
Kumar had previously raised concerns and filed complaints against senior officials, including a former DGP and a former home secretary, alleging harassment and discrimination, particularly as a Scheduled Caste officer.
He had also raised questions regarding the allotment of official vehicles, promotions of certain IPS batches, and his posting to what he deemed a "non-cadre" post.
