Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as New York City Mayor, Makes History

Democrat Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the Mayor of New York City shortly after midnight on Thursday, becoming the city’s new leader in a historic ceremony held at a decommissioned City Hall subway station in Manhattan.
Mamdani created history by becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City, the largest city in the United States. He took the oath of office with his hand on the Quran and described the moment as an extraordinary honour and responsibility.
In his inaugural remarks, Mamdani reflected on the significance of the former subway station, calling it a symbol of the importance of public transportation to the vitality, public health, and long-term legacy of New York City.
Beyond being the first Muslim mayor, Mamdani is also the city’s first mayor of South Asian origin and the first to be born in Africa. At just 34 years old, he is the youngest person to serve as New York City’s mayor in generations, marking a major milestone in the city’s political history.
